Sun Oka BeachBest Beaches In The South Okanagan British ColumbiaSun Oka beach, short for "Sunny Okanagan", is located near cozy Summerland motels and other Okanagan accomodations, and it is one of the Okanagan best beaches, well, we think so anyway! SunOka, a BC provincial parks has pretty much everything you need for enjoying great beach vacations in the Okanagan Valley. It's just a few kilometers from the city of Penticton, and just south of Summerland BC, in the Trout Creek area. Sun Oka beach is open as a day park only. Many boaters cruise over here for the day to enjoy water skiing, tubing and other watersport activities. It's also pet friendly, with a 'doggy beach', which makes it a top pick of our pal, Captain!
He always likes to come along with us! Pet's are not allowed right on the main beach, and must be on a leash. We've already spent a few beautiful warm spring days there. Looking south from the beach, you can see the city of Penticton, and across Okanagan Lake to the east is the village of Naramata. Vineyards and orchards line the clay cliffs all along Okanagan Lake.
The light sand is soft and fine, and the lake bottom is also free of most rock. Along the dog beach, where it's a bit more rocky, the kids love to collect rocks, and always find some of the best skippers! Fire pits on the beach, which are hard to find these days, let us stay well into the evenings for weiner roasts and smors! (check on campfire bans before using) It's a great spot for getting out on seadoo's for fun rides around the lake!
There is an area for boats to pull up to the shoreline, and the swimming areas are well marked. There are no lifeguards. Sun-Oka beach is a British Columbia Provincial Park. That means there's a parking fee. It's only $3 for the day, but the fine for no sticker in a vehicle is much more steep! Speaking of parking, there generally is plenty of parking in the lot. Many spots are well shaded to keep our vehicle nice and cool. There's a playground for the kids, volleyball net, lots of picnic tables in the sun or shade, and the is also plenty of grass area for a game of bocce ball or frisbee. Sun Oka beach also has change rooms, showers, outdoor water taps, and it's close to the community of Trout Creek. So if you do forget something, like we did the last time we were there (someone forgot the hotdogs!), it's just a few minutes to the nearest convenience store. You can also get fresh Okanagan fruit at the Blossom Fruit Stand in Trout Creek to take to the beach with you! Accommodations - Summerland Motels And Camping
Okanagan accomodations are plentiful and varied wherever you go. A few Summerland motels near Sun Oka Provincial Park run along highway 97 through Trout Creek. Many have outdoor pools, internet, complimentary breakfast, air conditioning and coin laundry facilities. The Summerland Campground & RV Park, is within walking distance to Sun Oka beach, and a few nearby Summerland wineries. Probably one of the nicest RV parks in the area, it was recently renovated to include an outdoor pool, lots of shade and grass, and even an outdoor movie screen! Full hookups during peak season will cost you about $55 per night with a minimum stay requirement. Other Summerland motels and accomodations not in Trout Creek are only a few minutes drive from Sun Oka beach, and offer much the same amenities. |
