Fantastic Sports Events Are Always Going On In The Okanagan Valley BC
The Okanagan BC is a year-round mecca for outdoor sports and recreation. Sports events go on all throughout the valley.
Some major competitions take place in the Okanagan that attract athletes from all over the world.
We have a number of events that take place either on land on in the water during summer. And in the winter the ski resorts in the Okanaga are host to winter events that attract skiers and snowboarders from all over.
There are also different sports camps, a hockey school, and even a golf school.
And, along with that the Okanagan is home to the Kelowna Rockets Western Hockey League team, the Okanagan Sun Football Team and the Falcons Baseball Team.
There are several other events that go on that anyone can take part in, which is great for visitors who come to the Okanagan. And these events take place throughout the year. Here are some of types of events that take place, which you can either participate in or be a spectator at.
The Okanagan BC holds all kinds of fun runs and triathlon events including 5K, 10K, half marathons, full triathlons, and even triathlons for relay teams throughout the summer months. There's also a wide variety of sport events that support cancer research, fitness and healthy lifestyle. Running and triathlon events begin in the spring and run through the fall.
These sports events generally mean that there will be some road closures and/or detours around the race routes. They often take place on busy summer weekends, so you should be prepared for this. (It's not that bad, though). :-)
DragonBoat Sports Events & Races
Did you know that dragon boating is the world's fastest growing watersport?
Dragon Boat racing roots lie in ancient myths and Chinese legends where the object of worship was the dragon. Historically, celebrations took place on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month of the Chinese calendar (late May to mid June on the solar calendar).
In the Okanagan Dragonboat festivals bring together people from all ages. Penticton, Kelowna and Vernon BC all hold dragon boat sports events. Whether you want to get involved, or get out and enjoy the spectacular boats, these Okanagan events are great fun. FUNTASTIC Festival - Vernon BC
The Vernon & District Funtastic Sports Society's main mission is to preserve and promote sports and recreation and its values in Okanagan communities. The Vernon Funtastic Canada's Largest Slo-Pitch Tournament and combined together as a sports event and a Music Festival. It is a long standing festival of more than 25 years in the city of Vernon BC. This Okanagan event takes place every summer during the July long weekend holiday. It's four days of playing ball and enjoying music in the great outdoors. The Funtastic festival grounds are located 2 minutes south of Vernon at the Department of National Defense grounds on Okanagan Hwy 97 - You can't miss it!
Summerland Action Festival
The Summerland BC ActionFest is a long standing sports event that takes place at the end of May, beginning of June in the town of Summerland. There's a slo-pitch tournament, 5.4km or 10km family fun run (The Giants Head Run), and the Man of Steel Triathlon. There's also a parade, vendor and entertainers throughout the weekend making this an amazing and well attended event. Check the Summerland ActionFest website for full schedules of events.
Golfing Events In The Okanagan
With so many amazing golf courses all over the Okanagan Valley, there are a number golf tournaments, from Corporate and Charity events to competitive BCGA sanctioned tournaments, as well as ladies only, or men's only golf events that take place here. Events like the Okanagan College Annual Charity Golf Tournament has been running for more than 20 years and brings a wide range of golfers to play this fun tournament. A lot of local coures also hold smaller touraments that you may want to join in on.
Rodeo Sports Events
Yep. Rodeo is a sport, and we can't leave it out here. ;-) Rodeo's deep roots lie in Okanagan history and the early cattle ranching days. There are a number of rodeos and stampedes happening in the Okanagan. For a historic look at early ranching days, the O'Keefe Ranch is a great attraction to visit.
The largest rodeo event is the The Interior Provincial Exhibition & Stampede that takes place every September Labour Day long weekend.
The Faulkland Stampede is also a popular rodeo sports event, having been going on for a whopping 95 years! Today the three day Falkland Stampede ranks among the top twelve rodeos in Canada. Thousands of people come out to this event, and Sunday is the biggest day.
Winter Sports Events
The Okanagan Valley ski resorts see a number of skiing and snowboarding sports events that attract world-class athletes. For example, Apex Mountain Ski Resort is recognized as a National Training Centrer for both Aerials and Moguls. National and international race teams come here to train and compete, which is amazing to watch. Big White and Silver Star are also home to skiing and snowboarding events and competitions, nordic events, and much more.
