Okanagan BC Runs & Triathlon Events
The Okanagan BC holds all kinds of fun runs and triathlon events, many during the summer months.
These include 5K, 10K, half marathons, full triathlons, and even triathlons for relay teams.
There's also a wide variety of sport events that support cancer research, fitness and healthy lifestyle.
There are often road closures and detours during major events so it's good to be prepared for delays if you're in the area during these times.
Below are some of the bigger triathlon events that happen in the Okanagan, as well as smaller community organized races that everyone can participate in.
Apple Triathlon - Kelowna BC
The Pushor Mitchell Apple Triathlon in Kelowna is one of the longest running - no pun intended ;-) - of all runs and triathlon sports event in the Okanagan. 2013 will be the 31st year for this race. The event takes place in August and competitions include Junior and Adult Elite races, open water swims, an Aquathon and Fun Run for athletes and their guests, as well as a popular 'Try a Tri', which has a short swim of 300m in Okanagan Lake, a flat 15km bike course and a 3 km long run. This is a great way to try out the great sports event of a triathlon race. During the week there are training camps for kids and teens, which includes a mini triathlon. There are road closures and detours during the triathlon. Local downtown traffic is affected both Saturday and Sunday, so you'll want to avoid driving in the downtown area. For more information about the race visit the Kelowna Apple Triathlon website.
Challenge Penticton Triathlon
The Challenge Penticton triathlon replaces the previous Penticton Ironman, which was last held in 2012.
While new to Penticton, The Challenge Penticton triathlon event is new to the Okanagan, but not new to the world of runs and triathlon racing. The Challenge race course is the same as the Ironman Penticton course. This race allows relay team participants for the first time in 2013. This Okanagan sports event takes place on the last Sunday in August. The swim begins on Okanagan Lake beach near the Penticton Lakeside Resort. Challenge Penticton website.
Peach City RunFest - Penticton
The Peach City RunFest, formerly known as the Peach City Half Marathon & 10K run, is a family friendly race that takes place on the May long weekend.
You can do a 5K or a 10K run, and there's also a Half Marathon race and a Kid's Mile race. Races begin and end at the west of the Skaha Lake beach promenade. Skaha Beach has free parking lots at either end of the beach.
There are a number of family friendly motel resorts near Skaha Lake beach. And, if you plan to attend this event, we recommend you book your accommodations well in advance, as the May long weekend is one of the busiest weekends in the Okanagan Valley.
People come from all over to participate in this race, so you too can register and join. Visit the Peach City RunFest website for more information.

Annual Terry Fox runs can vary in length, but they are open to any and all who would like to participate. You can walk, run, or even bike. Check local Okanagan newspapers to see where the runs will be taking place in your area.
A great place to find a list of all runs and triathlon races in the valley is on the Triathlon BC website. On the home page select the 'Race Calendar'.
Peachland Half Marathon
The Peachland Half Marathon Run or Walk, takes place in April each year. You can walk or run the 10k. The Half Marathon course consists of a two loop (21.1k) or a one loop (10k)course. The race starts from the Peachland Yacht Club and the course is mainly flat, with hills at the middle of the course for both loops. Check the Peachland website for more information.
The Peachland Triathlon is another one of the more popular runs and triathlon events of the Okanagan for more than 15 years. This event started in 1994. The race features 750m open water swim, 20k bike, and a 5k run. You can do the race as an individual or as a team (each team member participating in a leg of the race.) The swim starts and finishes at Swim Bay in Peachland. The bike course is two 10k loops, mostly flat and fast, with hills in the middle. The run course is flat on the way out and back, and passes through to Heritage Park and then returns to Swim Bay to finish. Various roads and parking lots and spaces are closed for this race, which takes place in July. Peachland community website.
