The Penticton Ironman Triathlon is the Subaru Ironman Canada, one of the most popular triathlon races in the world. It is the oldest Ironman competition in North America. If you are visiting the Okanagan during Ironman Canadan in Penticton, this triathlon is an amazing event to watch.

An annual event, Ironman Canada Penticton takes place every August. It is an event that is well supported by the local community, with hundreds of volunteers that support every aspect of the race from start to finish. And not to mention those who get out to watch and cheer the athletes on.

More than 2,500 representatives from all around the world travel to Penticton to compete. Perhaps the most spectacular part of the race is the swim start.

The Ironman race consists of a swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles and a run 26.2 miles.

Many people who watch the race first see the swim portion, then get to take a break to wait for the bikes to come in next. You can browse around downtown Penticton and enjoy breakfast and coffee at one of the local restaurants on Main Street.

It's best to make concrete plans for the day and avoid having to drive or cross the race path.

If you're out and about driving in the city, you'll only be able to cross Main Street and Skaha Lake Road at designated intersections.

Be prepared to wait (and be patient, too) - for more than an hour to get through in one direction, especially at peak times from 1 p.m. on. Once the bikes come in and proceed to the final leg of the Penticton Ironman, the marathon run, there will be a steady stream of competitors in both directions.

There are many other festivals fairs and events that take place in Penticton Canada and all around the Okanagan. The Kelowna Apple Triathlon usually takes place the weekend before Penticton Ironman Canada, so if you can't make it to watch in Penticton, you may be able to see a race in Kelowna.
