A passport does not of itself entitle the passport holder entry into another country, nor to consular protection while abroad or any other privileges, in the absence of any special agreements which cover the situation.

A passport, also, does not represent the right, or the place of residence, of the passport holder in the country in which the passport was issued. However, a passport does, normally entitle the passport holder to return to the country which issued the passport.

Important Note For U.S. Travelers To Canada:

Effective June 1, 2009, a new law known as the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) will require U.S. citizens, who are 16 years of age or older, who re-enter the United States by land and sea to have a passport for Canada or other appropriate secure identification document like a Nexus Card

Canada Travel Requirements For Kids

If you plan to travel into Canada with children, you must carry identification for each child under 18 years of age. Rules apply for divorced parents who share custody of their children.

To avoid unnecessary delays and difficulties entering into Canada with children it is important to be properly prepared. And it's a good idea for kids to have a passport for Canada as well.
