Events & Fun Winter Activities
There are a few Okanagan January events, fun winter activities and entertainment that you may be interested in while you're here.
Wine & Dining Deals
The January Wine & Dine is a two week event that local restaurants participate in to offer dining deals.
For two weeks beginning late January (and into February) you can get out for a nice meal where you are offered a special 3-course dinner.
Prices range from $15 to $35 (without tax and gratuity) at a variety of restaurants throughout the valley.
Some great restaurants include the Kettle Valley Station, Pasta Factory and Theo's in Penticton, the popular Gasthous on the Lake in Peachland, and Poppadoms and Mimi's Italian Grill in Kelowna.
Meals feature wine pairing suggestions to highlight Okanagan wine.
Winter Ice Wine Festival
For foodies and wine lovers especially, you can also take in the winter Okanagan wine festival which takes place at Sun Peaks Ski Resort near Kamloops BC.
The annual winter wine festival runs over 9 days in mid January. You can attend various events like the 'Fire & Ice' evening - a Carribean themed evening of entertainment, dancing, wine and food pairing.
Or plan a winter getaway package for the whole weekend that includes skiing, accommodations, and a choice of different wine tasting events and/or seminars.
Other Fun Winter Activities & Things To Do
In the Okanagan January weather is still very mild. A winter cold snap doesn't render temperatures much below minus 10 or 15 in the valley, and we don't get much snow in the south.
Because our winters are mild we can enjoy a variety of outdoor winter activities at the at the local ski resorts.
Try out the cross country and snow-shoeing trails that families and children can easily go out on.
Nickel Plate Nordic Centre at Apex Resort in Penticton is only 30km from the city. Renting snow shoes is fairly inexpensive and provides fun for a whole day (plus, the kids sleep really well that night!). Just pack a lunch, wear layers and take lots of water to drink.
If you prefer to be indoors a great place to visit with kids in the winter is the Okanagan Science Center in Vernon. Kids love the hands-on exhibits in electricity and magnetism, sound, mechanics, light and optics, astronomy and space science.
The Kelowna H2O Centre is also a fun place to be on a cold winter day when you'd rather be indoors. Kids love the wave pool and the 'Waverider' (ocean wave surf simulator) is a particular favorite for our own kid.
