Okanagan Canada WeatherAnd Everything You Need To Know About Each SeasonOkanagan Canada weather offers a bit of something for everyone all year long! We really do enjoy the best climate in Canada! Okanagan Canada weather brings great variety with each season depending on what part of the valley you are in. But for the most part, we enjoy long warm summers and loads of summer sunshine - over 2000 hours per year actually! A mild colorful fall season that extends at times into late October and November, when a morning chill is the best time for fresh apple picking. Mild temperate winters with little snow in the South Okanagan valley floor to massive mountains full of soft, fluff light and clean Okanagan powder in the Shuswap. Early spring offers us fresh, clean mountain air, cherry blossoms, and colorful yellow crocus flowers peeking out through a layer of glistening clean white snow.
Of course, mother nature does shake us up a bit from time to time! The occasional 'wind storm' or rainy day 'downpour' in the summer tends to keep us indoors for a while. Or a winter 'cold snap' that causes some freezing over some of the larger lakes, doesn't last more than a month or so, but sends us straight up to the mountains for some skiing. Summer forrest fires pose a significant risk each year during summer holidays and you should be aware of current conditions if you are here in the summer. The Okanagan Valley is situated along the 49th parallel, in an ideal wine producing region that shares latitude with other world wine regions such as France, Germany, northern Italy and Spain. Okanagan Canada Weather During Each SeasonWhether you're here for a long summer vacation, or a winter ski vacation, information about weather and what to expect is always good to have to make planning easier. As a rule, the Okanagan Valley receives over 2000 hours of sunshine yearly, and little precipitation. So the climate here lends itself perfectly to those who love to adventure outdoors year round. Springtime in the mountains and the Okanagan valley is so beautiful, with the first cherry blossoms waking up the lower landscapes with a tease of color and the sweet fragrance of fresh green grass and flowers. (ok, it's also known as allergy season!), and usually starts in March with warmer temperatures.
Okanagan Canada weather is generally quite warm during the day, 10 - 20 degrees Celsius, and mornings can be around the freezing mark. But the clouds that tend to blanket the valley in winter start to disappear. Daytime temperatures generally reach in the teens (Celsius). But it has been known to be warmer! A hint of winter creates a beautiful backdrop to the lakes, with specks of white topping the mountains that surround the valley. We have spent a day at the beach in April! The weather changed from sunshine, to rain, to hail and then snow all in one day!! But we had our wiener roast and campfire anyway.! This is what Okanagan Canada weather is all about! Spring skiing in the morning, and a bike ride in shorts in the afternoon! We also begin to see those RV's and motorcycles out, and some even brave the morning chills to get out tenting and spring camping! Sunshine and summertime.....We do love to spend our summer holiday on the beach somewhere in the Okanagan Valley.
It is, of course, our favorite season! It brings the heat we've waited for all winter long. The climate is dry desert like, with little rainfall. But the days are long and leisure... and we'll often be on the beach until 9 or 10 in the evening. Even more often, we're the last ones to leave! Summer weather can become very hot. Beginning in early July, daytime temperatures often reach up above 30°C (86°F) and are commonly as high as 38°C (86°F). Throughout July, evening temperatures in the South Okanagan can stay above 20°C and then rise quickly again early in the morning. This means there is no repreive from the heat. The transition into fall season is less distinct in the South Okanagan because it's situated in the Sonora desert but the Central and North Okanagan both experience a much more colorful autumn season that starts in early to mid September. Autumn sort of sneaks up on us, and then all of a sudden, there's nothing left on the beach except the well marked path made along the shoreline by all the visitors that were here.
Our wonderful Okanagan Canada weather is still warm enough for camping and fishing, and of course golf. Evenings are cooler, crisper and as the sun begins to set earlier, the lakes are cooler. During the month of September, temperatures are still warm in the day, mid 20's°C, when early fall apple season begins. October really cools off, and we start packing up the camping gear for the winter, and digging out the skis and snowboards to get ready for ski season. Around the end of October, apple season is pretty much over, but the late season apples are the very best tasting; crispy and juicy, and best off the tree! And November, we wait for the snow! Though it's much cooler, sometimes almost to freezing, snow only teases us in the Valley while we watch the mountain tops change into their white caps. When Does Winter Start?Well, that depends on what part of the Okanagan you're in. Again, the South Okanagan sees winter a bit later that it's northern neighbor. Snow lovers, of course, determine the start of winter by the start of the snow season. That's usually late November or early December, and runs through to late March.
When the valley is covered by cloud, which is typical for winter, we head out to ski for the day, above the clouds and in the sunshine! Okanagan Canada weather is not generally cold enough for the larger lakes to freeze over all winter long. Temperatures usually range between just below freezing to just above. When it's raining at the Valley floor, we know it's snowing up at the ski resorts! And it's not uncommon to see people out on their bicycles! (not us!) But in January and February, winter temperatures have been known to drop for a few weeks, allowing some of the larger lakes to freeze over partially. Smaller glacier lakes at higher elevations freeze over and are popular for ice fishing! Up at the ski hills, the weather is perfect! Rarely in the minus 20's°C (-4°F), there's no better place to be to escape the cloud cover down below! Historical Okanagan Canada Weather InformationHere's a few bits of Okanagan Canada weather informations and averages, based on the Central Okanagan Region (because it's central). We especially like the hours of sunshine!
Because Okanagan Canada weather varies throughout the region, it's difficult to say exactly what it will be like in each individual city. In a nutshell, Kelowna weather is commonly similar to Penticton weather. The weather in Osoyoos, is generally warmer than the rest of the Okanagan, and the Shuswap is generally colder with much more snow. Now that you know what Okanagan Canada weather is like, why not check out the beaches! |
