The April calendar of events for the Okanagan has some great festivals, celebrations and exciting things to do around the Okanagan Valley.

With spring in full gear, fruit trees are blossoming (it's also allergy season for many!), the winter cloud cover is definitely gone, and many are out enjoying hiking and biking trails already.

Many campgrounds and RV parks are now open for the season.

If you're a diehard for the snow you may be able to catch some of the tail end skiing and snowboarding at Okanagan Ski Resorts if you're lucky.

And farmer's markets that we all look so forward to are beginning their season as well. It's a great time to spend a sunny April morning browsing for locally-grown, fruit and vegetables, home-baked goods, honey, jams, preserves, pottery, soaps, bedding plants, woodwork, local arts & crafts.

Arts & Cultural Celebrations

Every year at the end of April, schools and communities across British Columbia and the Okanagan host a mosaic of events and activities as part of the annual Arts and Culture Week.

Many businesses partner with local artists in a month-long Art Walk event.

You'll find beautiful artworks displayed in local downtown windows and shops, as well as a number of Okanagan wineries as they are opening their doors for tours and tastings.

Look for special displays in communities throughout the Okanagan.

BC Interior Jazz Festival

Generally held in Kelowna, BC, the BC Interior Jazz Festival hosts a three day music event with a variety of Jazz Bands, Jazz and Combination Choirs, and Jazz Combos.

In addition to its focus as a competitive performance venue, the BC Interior Jazz Festival features the Jazz Masters' Concert, a show featuring a special guest artist.

The festival is open to the public, with performances running daily at venues in the city including the Kelowna Community Theatre and Rotary Centre for the Arts. More information at www.jazzfestbc.ca

Okanagan Fest of Ale

Next on the April calendar is one of the largest festivals of its kind in BC, the Okanagan Fest of Ale features over 75 Brewpubs, Microbreweries and Regional Breweries, and if you've ever been to one of these events, you'll know it's not just your average brew ha ha!

You will taste some of the best of the Pacific Northwest handcrafted ales, traditional beers, like porters and lagers, as well as some fine and unusual ales. There's always a great line up of entertainment as well, so if you're not there to taste the beer, you will certainly enjoy the music!

Okanagan Spring Wine Festival

There are four Okanagan Wine Festivals throughout the year, and the spring wine festival takes place annually for 10 days at the beginning of May (or end of April and into the first days of May).

There are over 100 events to enjoy at different venues throughout the region during this much loved April calendar event, and many local Okanagan wineries have opened their doors for the season.

It's a great way to enjoy the spring weather, colorful scenery, great food and wine, and try out some new releases.

Some of the events at previous Spring Wine Festivals in the Okanagan have included the 'Valley First Vintages in the Park' and 'All You Need is Cheese'

All You Need is Cheese, Terasen Gourmet & Grapes, Cadbury's Melt in your mouth Chocolate with Heavenly Wines, WestJet Wine Tastings, Pioneers Dinner and Valley First Grand Finale Consumer Tastings are also popular.

Kiwanis Music Festival

Next on the April calendar is the Kiwanis Music Festival, an annual performing arts festival held throughout the month of April at several venues in the city of Kelowna and also in Penticton.

Amateur and young performing artists demonstrate their achievements in music, dance and speech arts.

Performances are typically offered in Choirs, Voice, Piano, Strings, Speech Arts & Drama, Woodwinds, Brass, Concert Bands, Ballet, Modern Dance, and Stage Dance.
